Manulife Travel Insurance Canada Review
Based on my personal reviews, Manulife Travel Insurance Canada is one of the best travel insurers in the country. It’s legit, not a scam; it’s a great insurance company. Please do not confuse one of the best travel insurers with a PERFECT travel insurance company.
When reading negative reviews online, keep in mind that most of the negative reviews are the result of people not understanding the travel insurance contract they signed. I do recommend that you read this article in full because even if you disagree with some of the contents, I’m being honest with you.
On a side note, you should also look into seeing if your credit card issuer offers travel insurance; although credit card travel insurance typically isn’t as good as Manulife Travel Insurance Canada, it’s typically adequate.
The insurance industry is the people’s business, and travel insurance is one of the most expensive types of insurance for an insurance company regarding payouts.
Because God forbid something happens to you while you’re on vacation, we’re talking about the insurance company having to pay PRIVATE medical care expenses, medications, ambulances, nurses, doctors, surgeons, airplanes, helicopters, room and board, food in another country, etc. Meaning that the insurer will have to have established diplomatic relations in another country to take care of you if the worst happens.
People who don’t buy travel insurance and get injured on vacation can go from millions of dollars in the bank to millions of dollars in debt in the blink of an eye. Once you wrap your head around how IMPORTANT having travel insurance is, you’ll typically become thankful that companies like Manulife Travel Insurance Canada even exist.

As a Canadian, you must understand that our Universal healthcare system only applies to the PROVINCE in which you reside; we have PROVINCIAL health cards. As an Ontarian, my taxes go to ONTARIO’s public healthcare system, and it’s not the Ontario nor Canadian taxpayers’ responsibility to pay for my medical bills while I’m on vacation outside the province or outside of the country of Canada.
Important Facts About Travel Insurance Companies and Keeping Costs Down (Post Underwriting)
The reason Travel Insurance is inexpensive revolves around post-underwriting; similar to Group Insurance, the insurance company will only investigate your medical history AFTER you’ve submitted a claim.
Post-claims underwriting is when an insurer investigates an individual or small group policyholder’s medical history after the policy has been issued, and in particular after claims are submitted. Insurers have said that post-claims underwriting prevents fraud and therefore helps keep premiums rates low.
If the insurance companies started investigating your medical history before issuing you a travel insurance policy, the costs for travel insurance would SKYROCKET, potentially being 5X more than the price quotes you see today.
With that said, you should NEVER lie on your Travel Insurance application because you do not want to waste your money and your time. Travel Insurance contracts are legally binding and post-underwritten so Canadians can enjoy the joy of traveling with a feeling of security that if the worst happens, they won’t fall into financial ruin.
Manulife Travel Insurance Canada is a great travel insurer; obviously, it’s not perfect, but they’re one of my favorites and definitely worthy of your consideration.
